On November 16, 2023, an extensive crisis exercise focused on professional emergency response took place at Vienna Airport.
The exercise scenario simulated a situation involving a passenger on board an aircraft diagnosed with a highly infectious disease.
Key organizations participated, including the State Health Directorate of Lower Austria, the fire department, Flughafen Wien AG, and Austrian Airlines. An integral part of the exercise was the use of the Bio-bag isolation transport vehicle from EGO Zlín.
The exercise included measures on board and after landing, coordination with authorities and emergency organizations, and an assessment of the impacts on operational processes. Approximately 80 people participated, including test passengers. Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig, State Councilor for Health of Lower Austria, commended the success of the exercise and emphasized the importance of professional cooperation in such situations.
Julian Jäger and Günther Ofner from Flughafen Wien AG thanked all participants for successful collaboration, while Francesco Sciortino from Austrian Airlines highlighted the significance of crisis exercises for the aviation industry. The goal of the exercise was to improve communication and collaboration among organizations and partners to ensure smooth handling in case of emergencies at the airport.

The international workshop BIOHAZARD TEAM 2025 took place on 2 December 2025 at the EGO Zlín Academy. Experts from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Austria shared their experience in managing high-consequence infectious diseases and provided valuable feedback for further development of equipment and procedures used by biohazard response teams.
